Overview
The University of Utah Acute Care Line (ACL) is a pilot program that provides hospitalists with timely access to U of U specialists. If successful, this will replace the current curbside consultation model with official telephone consultations routed through the U of U Transfer Center.
The Acute Care Line uses the same number as the existing TeleHub line — 1-801-213-4983
Timing of Consultations

How to Request a Consult
- Call 1-801-213-4983 (same as the existing TeleHub line)
- A triage nurse will answer and determine the urgency
- The nurse will connect you to the appropriate on-call specialist
- The ACL staff will collect relevant records, labs, results, and notes
- At the time of the consult, ACL staff will connect the U of U specialist to you and stay on the call to help document in Epic
- The U of U specialist will document an official consult note in Epic

Full Workflow
- Hospitalist calls the ACL (1-801-213-4983) requesting a U of U specialist consult
- ACL staff triages the request:
- Acute → 15 min to 2 hour callback
- Non-acute → 24–48 hour scheduled callback
- ACL staff contacts the on-call specialist
- ACL staff collects records — labs, imaging, notes, etc.
- At consult time, ACL staff connects the U of U specialist to the hospitalist and stays on the line to document in Epic
- U of U specialist documents an official consult note in Epic
